Mattel takes orders for Brick Shop 1:12 Mercedes gullwing model

Mattel has been successful at developing ideas and throwing more money at them: Barbie has its inspirations in Bild Lilli, Hot Wheels steered the toy car market away once dominated by Matchbox from realism into lazy fantasy, and its new Brick Shop challenges Lego.

One of its grandest licensed products for Mattel Brick Shop is a 1:12 scale Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198), better known to many as the gullwing. The original was an advanced racing supercar adapted for the road and the first production car with fuel injection, its straight-six developing 215 PS.

Developed in collaboration between Mercedes-Benz designer Benoît Monterroso and Hot Wheels’ Craig Callum, the Premium Series model features 1,600 individual parts, and, completed, measures 36 cm long and 10 cm high. Bonnet, boot and gullwing doors can be opened. Mattel also provides parts to customize the model, including wheels, headlights, radiator grille, seat, side skirts and side exhaust pipes. There is even a spare tyre in the boot.

The result is less clunky than some Lego offerings, though the large size helps with realism.

The model is accompanied by a 1:64 Hot Wheels die cast version.

Pre-orders commenced May 2 and the model hits retailers during the northern summer.

The Real Thing:

The 1954–1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing" (W198) is an iconic, race-derived supercar featuring distinctive top-hinged doors necessitated by its lightweight tubular frame. Powered by a 3.0L fuel-injected inline-six engine, it was the fastest production car of its time. Only 1,400 were produced, with 29 featuring lightweight aluminum bodies.

Key Features and Specifications:

  • Engine: 2,996 cc SOHC inline-six with Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection, producing roughly 215–240 HP.

  • Doors: Unique upward-opening "gullwing" doors, designed because the car's rigid, lightweight racing chassis (derived from the W194) featured high side sills that prevented conventional doors.

  • Performance: Top speeds exceeding 150 mph (240 km/h).

  • Production: 1,400 units produced between 1954 and 1957.

  • Variants: 29 all-aluminum-bodied models were built for racing.

  • Legacy: Known as one of the first supercars, it was developed after U.S. importer Max Hoffman convinced Mercedes to build a road-going version of their successful W194 race car.

  • Value: Highly collectible, with prices often reaching seven figures.

Auction House RM Sotheby’s is calling this ‘The Last One’. According to TopGear.com, this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing is the last one ever built.
