Name Breakdown: Custom '68 Chevy Camaro
The Camaro was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang.
In naming the car, Chevrolet sought a word starting with "C," consistent with their other models like the Chevelle and Corvair. When Chevrolet selected "Camaro" from a list of 2,000 words, they claimed it was derived from a term meaning friend or comrade. When pressed for further explanation, executives humorously remarked, “A Camaro is a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.” Years later, Chevrolet acknowledged that the name was chosen primarily because "it sounds cool."

Price: In 1968, the base price for a Chevrolet Camaro two-door hardtop was approximately $2,694. Choosing the convertible model increased the starting price to around $2,950. Today, a classic 1968 Chevrolet Camaro generally ranges in price from $30,000 to $120,000.
Production number: According to official reports from Chevrolet, the company manufactured 214,707 coupes and 20,440 convertibles, resulting in a total production of 235,147 units.
Hot Wheels 1:64 Versions:
The original Hot Wheels 1:64 Custom Camaro was designed by Harry Bradley and first released on May 18, 1968, as part of the original "Sweet 16" (or "Original 16") lineup that launched the entire Hot Wheels brand. The modern casting, designed by Dwayne Vance, is called the Custom '68 Camaro. This version was first released in 2023 as part of the HW Slammed Series. The models below are based on the modern casting.
